If you have a small business and you’re looking for a simple website, you may not want to spend thousands of dollars building a website.

There are a variety of products you can use for little or no cost. You just have to know where to look and develop the skills to establish a site that meets your needs.

Here are a few of  the most basic things to consider when building a site.

Register your Domain and setup site hosting.

To begin, you will need to identify a domain name for your website. You may want to make a list of several to try just in case your top pick isn’t available. Once you have a list of domain names you will want to select a reputable hosting company. There are a lot of hosting companies available, some good and some not so good. So, be sure you do some research. They all have various pricing plans so watch for that as well. I’ve seen some hosting companies offer a free domain name with a hosting account. So, just be sure to shop around. If you are planning to use a content management system (CMS), you will want to make sure your hosting is on a Linux Server and offers MySQL database and PHP services.

Install a Content Management System

My choice for a CMS is WordPress. There are others to choose from, but we won’t get into the pros and cons of each here. You could build a website using just HTML5 and CSS, but WordPress does a whole lot of the hard work for you. Best of all, it is an open-source software package which means you can get it for free. Furthermore, word is that about 25% of the websites on the internet are built with WordPress.

Determine Site Features.

What do you want your website to do? If you want an e-commerce site, there themes and plugins that can serve your needs. WordPress has an abundance of themes and plugins to choose from. Themes determine the look and feel of your site. Plugins provide extra functionality to your site.

Identify Site Pages

Of course you will want a homepage on your site. This page summarizes what you are all about. You will at least want a contact page, a blog, and an about page. Other pages will depend on your business model and legal requirements.

Write Your Content.

You have message to send the world or a product to sell. Each needs it’s own unique content. There are some major considerations to make when writing content. I’ve found that there are an abundance of sites giving advice on writing site content so doing your own search on how to write great site content will usually yield great results.

Select Site Images.

The images you choose for your site will have a big role in how well it looks. You will want to select sharp, high-quality images so your site looks the best.

Learn a little about Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

You can’t expect for Google to just list your site like you want. That is where SEO comes in. There are lots of strategies to getting your site listed in the search engines as early as possible. You should start with reading and following the advice of the search engines when developing the content for your site so that you can optimize your opportunities for a good listing in Google.

Connect your site to Google Analytics & Search Console.

Google Analytics provides insights to your website visits by giving you a variety of counts and other statistics. You will want to insert a snippet of code provided by Google in order for the Analytics data to be collected.

Additionally, Google Search Console provides a great deal of information about the keyword queries used and pages visited on your site.

Connect with Social Media.

Social Media connections have become necessary for helping people find and access your site. You will see social media icons all over many sites in an attempt to optimize and build links to your site.
